Reports: Online Pharmacies Operating Illegally, Widespread Use of Counterfeits
A study by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy has found that 97 percent of online pharmacies were “found to be operating out of compliance with state and federal laws and/or NABP patient safety and pharmacy practice standards.” This includes selling prescription drugs without a prescription (90% of the sites) and almost half of them sold non-Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved drugs.
This comes at a time when federal authorities have seized large quantities of counterfeit prescription drugs, including Viagra and found them to contain ingredients such as dry wall/plaster and blue ink. Yes, blue ink.
In June, the Food and Drug Administration announced the seizure of more than $41 million in illegal medicines worldwide and shut down 1,677 websites.
