Cal AG Harris is Promoting Greater Privacy Awareness
Among Tech Sector With Privacy Guides
As California Attorney General Kamala Harris’ first term comes to a close, she has given online privacy a greater priority than any of her predecessors. Among the steps she has taken during her first term are:
- Securing a deal with leading app developers to provide greater privacy protection for mobile users;
- The creation of a Privacy Enforcement and Protection Unit within the Attorney General’s office;
- Sending notices to hundreds of app developers of their need to comply with California’s landmark Online Privacy Protection Act (“OPPA”) which requires operators of commercial websites, including mobile apps, to conspicuously post a privacy policy if they collect personally identifiable information from Californians; and
- Bringing a high profile lawsuit against Delta Airline for failing to comply with OPPA.
Harris also has reached out to tech companies by issuing guides on privacy. This includes:
- “Privacy on the Go: Recommendations for Mobile App Developers” and “
- “Making Your Privacy Practices Public: Recommendations on Developing a Meaningful Privacy Policy.”
Both guides are embedded below.
Harris’ is overwhelmingly favored to win reelection in November, as her opponent is virtually unknown, so we can expect to see another four years of increasing efforts at privacy awareness from Sacramento.
